Casa das Mudas Art Centre, designed by architect Paulo David and nominated for the Mies van der Rohe 2005 contemporary European architecture award, has a covered area under construction of 12,000m2, having been built as an extension of the Museum of Calheta, where the Gallery currently lies.

With an entirely new and independent building, the new Centre includes an area for exhibitions, an auditorium, library, shop, cafeteria, restaurant and a wide area for cultural activities for ateliers and art workshops, as well as an underground parking lot with space for 92 vehicles.

The building was designed with the idea of creating a simple and pleasant environment, providing views of the sea and the surrounding coast from an inner perspective.

In its construction technical solutions were adopted to assure the functionality of the spaces and the best possible integration of the building in the surrounding area.
