The Casa das Mudas Art Centre, internationally awarded for its architecture and perfect integration with the landscape, is located in the town of Calheta, in the West area of Madeira, just 20 minutes away from the city of Funchal. This culture space is one of Sociedade de Desenvolvimento Ponta do Oeste's most important investments, and its singularity, embedded in the building structure, goes along with the mission it was built to accomplish: To attract and raise awareness of art in general, and contemporary art in particular, promoting life-long learning and art education.
In order to achieve this goal, the Sociedade de Desenvolvimento Ponta do Oeste is to develop a programme of activities that will help increasing the cultural offer in Madeira and enhancing the role of education in art. These activities include exhibitions, shows, art workshops and training.
The Art Centre main goals are:
- To further the decentralization of the cultural offer, creating a benchmark project in the West Area for the Autonomous Region of Madeira;
- To develop a comprehensive policy in terms of cultural offer allowing different groups to access culture and leisure as well as artistic and cultural production;
- To stimulate artistic involvement and creativity among different age groups;;
- To increase the offer of educational activities and training through art contributing to the formation of new audiences;
- To maintain and increase the artistic and cultural heritage of Madeirans.
